- Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. Mix a pinch of baking soda with a dollop of toothpaste, and dab a little onto the cold sore, letting it dry. Repeat three to five times a day until the sore disappears.
- Balmex. Apply Balmex, the diaper rash ointment, to a cold sore the moment you feel it forming.
- Barbasol Shaving Cream. Rub a dab of Barbasol into the cold sore. The emollients in the shaving cream hasten healing.
- Cool Whip. Place a compress of Cool Whip on the cold sore to speed healing, then rinse with cool water.
- Coppertone. If you're prone to cold sores, wear sunscreen with a SPF 15 or more to protect your lips and face from ultraviolet rays, which trigger one out of every four cases of cold sores.
- Dannon Yogurt. Putting plain yogurt on a cold sore dries it up immediately. The acidophilus bacteria in yogurt kill the bacteria infecting the cold sore.
- Dickinson's Witch Hazel. Gently break the cold sore open, and using a Q-Tips Cotton Swab, apply Dickinson's Witch Hazel to help it dry.
- Heinz Vinegar. With a cotton ball, apply Heinz White Vinegar liberally to the cold sore. The vinegar kills bacteria, dries up the cold sore, and eases the swelling and pain.
- Lipton Tea. When you feel a cold sore forming, dampen a Lipton Tea Bag with warm water and place it over the cold sore. When the tea bag cools, wet it with warm water again and again. The tannin in the tea dries the cold sore and soothes the pain.
- Preparation H. The moment you feel a cold sore forming on your lips, dab Preparation H on the spot to stop the swelling.
- Smirnoff Vodka. Gently break the cold sore open, and using a Q-Tips Cotton Swab, apply Smirnoff Vodka to help it dry.
- Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. Apply a dab of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly over the cold sore to protect it from further contamination.
